Clash Over Kasoa Decongestion Leaves 5 Injured as Traders Resist Eviction

Five individuals sustained injuries on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, following a violent confrontation between traders and a municipal task force in Kasoa, situated in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region.

The chaos erupted during a decongestion exercise aimed at clearing illegal structures, removing street vendors, and restoring pedestrian and vehicular flow in heavily congested areas of the town. Officials say the operation became necessary after traders repeatedly flouted warnings and continued to occupy walkways and road shoulders, creating obstructions and posing safety risks.

Despite prior dialogue with leaders of the traders’ association and the issuance of a clear ultimatum to vacate unauthorised spots, resistance mounted as the task force moved in. Tensions boiled over into open confrontation, with some traders hurling stones at the officers. Eyewitnesses also reported stabbing incidents during the melee.

Emergency services confirmed that five injured individuals—suffering various degrees of wounds—were rushed to the Kasoa Polyclinic for medical attention. The identities of the injured and their current conditions have not been made public.

The Municipal Assembly has yet to issue a formal statement on the altercation, but insiders say authorities remain resolute in their mission to enforce urban discipline and improve sanitation.

This incident mirrors a similar decongestion operation carried out in Accra on Tuesday, May 20, by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly. That effort also sparked tension, although it was largely brought under control without reported injuries.

Officials have hinted at a broader, coordinated plan to reclaim public spaces across Ghana’s urban centres, targeting areas plagued by illegal trading, sanitation hazards, and mobility challenges.
