Church of Pentecost Mpoasei District Champions Clean-Up and Flood Prevention Efforts

In a bid to promote environmental cleanliness and curb communicable diseases, the Church of Pentecost Mpoasei District-Dansoman Area has embarked on a massive clean-up exercise across various communities.

This initiative aligns with the church’s Environmental Care Awareness program, which encourages communal responsibility and active involvement in sanitation efforts.

The clean-up operation covered key areas including Dansoman Atomic Hotel, Mpoasei, Commando, Yellow House, and culminated at the Glefe station. Church members, clad in work attire, took to the streets with brooms, shovels, and waste bags, demonstrating their commitment to a cleaner and healthier community.

Speaking on the exercise, District Pastor Gilbert John Ayamah emphasised that the initiative forms part of the Church of Pentecost’s Possessing the Nation agenda. He highlighted the church’s role in fostering community development beyond spiritual matters.

“The church belongs to the community, and for that, if we sit aloof for filth to take over, then we are not fulfilling our mandate. Christianity is not just about dressing well and attending church; we must also take responsibility for our surroundings,” Pastor Ayamah stated.

He further stressed that the increasing filth in the communities called for urgent action, adding that the church intends to make this exercise a periodic event to ensure sustained cleanliness and disease prevention.

Hon. Rev. Kweku Addo, Member of Parliament for the Ablekuma West Constituency, commended the Church of Pentecost for their proactive approach to sanitation and encouraged other churches in the community to follow suit.

“I urge all constituents to desist from dumping refuse into gutters and streets. Cleanliness is a shared responsibility, and we must all contribute to making our communities healthier,” he remarked.

Hon. Addo also lauded the church’s monumental efforts in tackling long-standing flooding issues in the Dansoman-Yellow House to Glefe area.

The church, recognising the devastating impact of seasonal floods on homes and businesses, took the lead in constructing a much-needed drainage system valued at GHS 667,000.

Severe flooding has been a persistent challenge in the area, causing significant damage to properties and disrupting livelihoods. The newly constructed drainage system is expected to mitigate the effects of heavy rainfall and improve overall sanitation.

“The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Akweley Ocloo, is very concerned about flooding issues in Accra. She has assured me of her commitment to visiting the constituency to assess the flood-prone areas,” Hon. Addo added.

Additionally, he assured residents that the assembly would be dredging other flood-prone communities as part of broader efforts to combat urban flooding.

He reiterated the importance of public education on sanitation, noting that improper waste disposal habits stem from a lack of awareness.

“The assembly will engage community members in sanitation education programs to address the root causes of indiscriminate waste disposal. We must change our mindset and behaviours if we want lasting change,” he concluded.

The Church of Pentecost’s clean-up campaign and drainage initiative stand as a testament to the power of community-driven development, setting an example for other religious and civic groups to emulate.
