Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has issued a firm call to members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rise above tribal and religious divisions as the party prepares to elect a new flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
Speaking at the launch of the party’s newly established think tank, the Patriotic Institute, on Wednesday, June 25, Mr Kufuor reminded NPP faithful to remain true to democratic principles and focus on choosing a leader who can unify the country and provide real solutions to Ghana’s development challenges.
“We are a democratic party, and we uphold common humanity,” the former president declared. “In a democracy, we don’t go for tribe or religion or gender but the individual. It is one man, one vote.”
His message comes at a critical time, as internal wrangling and subtle jabs between prospective flagbearer hopefuls have begun to emerge following the party’s announcement of January 31, 2026, as the date for its presidential primaries.
Mr Kufuor, revered for his statesmanship and legacy, warned that the NPP risks damaging its public image if it allows sectarianism to define its internal politics.
“We’ve been brushed by our opponents as a tribal party — and these days, we are even adding religion,” he lamented. “If these things come from our own mouths, then I tell you, we are perpetuating it ourselves.”
He cautioned that such rhetoric only reinforces negative stereotypes and erodes the democratic values that the party was built upon.
Instead, Mr Kufuor urged the rank and file to prioritise competence, vision, and unity in selecting the next flagbearer.
“If we want power, we have to present a person who will be convincing to the generality of the electorate,” he said, adding that the NPP’s leadership must focus on solving the “problems of the community at large”.
