The Paramount Chief of the Offuman Traditional Area in the Bono-East Region, Nana Gyan Brorkour II, has issued a stern caution to Ghanaian youth to stay away from the abuse of hard drugs, warning that their increasing use is destroying lives and communities.
Speaking during an engagement with final-year students sitting for this year’s WASSCE, the chief expressed grave concern over the growing abuse of substances such as the locally popular drug nicknamed “Red”.
“These drugs have made the majority of the youth go mad, and some of them too are battling their health,” Nana Gyan Brorkour II lamented. “I entreat you to do something with your hands in order to keep you from such an act.”
The traditional ruler also called on parents to intensify monitoring of their children’s movements and associations, stressing that family vigilance is critical in curbing the menace.
“Parents must always monitor the movement of their wards and also talk to them about these hard drugs,” he said, urging families to engage in constant dialogue with their children about the dangers of drug abuse.
Drug abuse, particularly among young people, has become a mounting social issue across several Ghanaian communities. Reports of addiction, mental health breakdowns, and premature deaths linked to substances like “Red” have raised alarm among health officials, community leaders, and security agencies.
Nana Gyan Brorkour II said it was imperative for the youth to focus on vocational skills, education, and entrepreneurship rather than falling prey to peer influence and drug peddlers.
He encouraged the students to remain disciplined and committed to their studies and to channel their energy into productive ventures that would prepare them for a brighter future.
