A member of the legal team representing Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has assured the public that the embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is prepared to mount a solid legal defence in the event that formal charges are filed against him.
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Monday, June 2, lawyer Enoch Afoakwa stated that Wontumi is confident in the legitimacy of his actions and will respond appropriately once the legal process officially begins.
“Every reasonable person facing a law enforcement agency who is diligent in his dealings and believes in his actions has a reasonable defence to the allegations that are being peddled or levelled against him, for which he is being investigated,” Afoakwa said.
He added that the legal team is closely monitoring the situation and awaiting an official charge from the investigating authorities before outlining their next legal steps.
“This is an aspect that we don’t want to pre-empt. We await the official charge from the law enforcement officers. If they really want to proceed on that tangent, then from there, we will know what actions we will take,” he added.
Wontumi was granted bail on Wednesday, May 28, with a GH¢50 million bond and two justified sureties. His legal team, led by MP Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed that all bail requirements were met by Friday, May 30. However, his release was delayed due to a pending motion to review the bail terms, which was filed at the High Court in Accra on May 30.
The motion, initially scheduled for hearing on Tuesday, June 3, was formally withdrawn on Monday, June 2, a move that facilitated Wontumi’s release from EOCO custody later that day.
The NPP regional chairman is currently under investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for alleged offences including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering. Authorities say the probe has both domestic and international dimensions.
