Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been granted bail to the tune of GH¢1 million with two sureties after appearing before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, October 6, 2025.
The bail comes ahead of three mining-related charges expected to be preferred against him at the High Court in Accra on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
Wontumi was invited by the CID for questioning over his alleged involvement in illegal mining activities, following a stern ultimatum issued by Attorney-General Dr Dominic Ayine, who warned last Friday that he would be arrested if he failed to honour the invitation.
His lead counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, said his client had fully cooperated with investigators and met all bail conditions but cautioned against any attempt to revoke his existing police enquiry bail, describing such a move as one that would be “vigorously resisted”.
The case, linked to Akonta Mining Limited, is part of a broader probe into illegal mining activities that have sparked national debate over political accountability and environmental protection.
