Member of Parliament for Tano North, Gideon Boako, has rejected claims that former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia should not be given another chance to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following his defeat in the 2024 presidential election.
Some factions within the NPP, particularly supporters of other flagbearer hopefuls, have argued that Bawumia’s electoral loss disqualifies him from seeking the party’s flagbearership again.
But speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Thursday, August 28, Boako—who also serves as Bawumia’s technical advisor and spokesperson—stressed that a single electoral setback should not define the political career of any leader.
“The downfall of a man is never the end of his life. He is not the first to attempt the presidential seat and lose it. Others tried, they lost, they persevered with tenacity, and they were able to make it,” Boako said.
He cited examples from Ghana’s political history, noting that leaders such as John Agyekum Kufuor, John Evans Atta Mills, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and John Dramani Mahama all suffered electoral defeats before eventually rising to the presidency.
“If Kufuor tried once, twice and made it; Akufo-Addo tried multiple times and made it; Mills tried multiple times and made it; and John Mahama also tried multiple times and made it, why should he sit back?” he argued.
Boako urged the NPP to unite behind Dr Bawumia instead of sidelining him, insisting that perseverance remains a proven pathway to political success.
“He also thinks God will be on his side. He will try again, and he can make it such that he can deliver to Ghana what he thinks God has given him,” he added.
