Bawumia Commands 52% in NPP Poll, Cementing Frontrunner Status for 2028 Flagbearership

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has taken a commanding lead in the race to lead the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections, according to a new poll by Global Info Analytics.

The survey, released on August 21, 2025, shows Dr Bawumia enjoying 52% support among NPP delegates, a figure that puts him well ahead of his competitors as the party prepares for its presidential primaries.

His nearest rival, outspoken former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, secured just 17%, widening the gap between the two frontrunners. The rest of the field registered marginal support: Dr Bryan Acheampong polled 3%, former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum had 1%, while Kwabena Agyapong, Boakye Agyarko, and Addai Nimo each recorded less than 1%.

The poll further revealed that 10% of delegates remain undecided, and another 9% declined to disclose their choice, suggesting there is still room for manoeuvring as the primaries draw closer.

Global Info Analytics surveyed 2,656 NPP delegates, of which 2,560 completed all responses, across 263 constituencies between August 12 and 20. The research employed computer-assisted telephone interviews and carries a confidence level of 99% with a margin of error of ±2.44%.

While the poll confirms Dr Bawumia’s dominant position, political observers warn that the contest is not yet settled. The significant bloc of undecided delegates could play a pivotal role, particularly if alliances or shifting campaign dynamics sway opinions in the coming weeks.

Nonetheless, with a majority already leaning in his favour, analysts say Dr. Bawumia enters the final stretch of the NPP primaries as the candidate to beat, his lead underscoring strong grassroots backing and a clear appetite within the party for his candidacy.
