Bawumia Campaign Will Shun Tribal, Religious Rhetoric – Kofi Tonto

Kofi Tonto, an aide to former Vice President and 2024 NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has assured Ghanaians that their campaign will be anchored on policies and solutions rather than divisive rhetoric.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Point of View on Monday, August 25, Mr Tonto emphasised that the Bawumia campaign team would not resort to tribal or religious appeals, which he described as “irresponsible” and “insensitive”.

“We will focus on the message. We will not denigrate any group of people in Ghana. We will focus on the message because Ghana is gradually becoming a nation of one people in terms of even tribes. When you take a Ghanaian, you can get three or four tribes of that Ghanaian. That is the oneness that Ghana is increasingly becoming.

“Let us eschew tribal and religious bigotry. It is irresponsible. It is insensitive. It is not the right thing we must do as a political party,” he stated.

His remarks come against the backdrop of social media speculation following a widely circulated video allegedly suggesting that NPP flagbearer hopeful Dr Bryan Acheampong blamed Dr Bawumia for the long-standing Mamprusi-Kusasi conflict in northern Ghana.

The Acheampong campaign, however, has dismissed the claims, describing the footage as a deliberate distortion. In a statement released over the weekend, the team said the viral video had been “mischievously pieced together and venomously captioned” to stoke tribal tensions.

Mr Tonto insisted that Dr Bawumia’s campaign would remain focused on credible ideas and solutions that resonate with the needs of Ghanaians, not emotional manipulation or divisive tactics.
