Baffoe-Bonnie Vows Swift Election Petitions to End Political Uncertainty

Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has vowed to overhaul Ghana’s election petition process, promising that future disputes will be resolved before inauguration day, as he faces vetting by Parliament for the Chief Justice role.

Speaking before the Appointments Committee, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie outlined a detailed plan to prevent delays that have historically left presidents-elect in legal limbo. Drawing lessons from previous election petitions, he stressed the need for strict timelines, modernised service of court documents, and operational flexibility during holiday periods.

“By combining electronic filing, swift service, and extended registry operations, we can ensure petitions are adjudicated efficiently within the 42-day constitutional window,” he stated, emphasising that elections scheduled in early November would allow sufficient time for petitions to be resolved before January 7.

The Acting Chief Justice highlighted that these reforms would prevent uncertainty that has previously hampered governance, citing the 2013 and 2020 presidential election petitions as examples.

He stressed that timely resolution strengthens democratic stability and bolsters public confidence in the judiciary.
