The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has officially transitioned from peacekeeping to peace enforcement operations in Bawku and surrounding areas, following a directive from President and Commander-in-Chief John Dramani Mahama.
The move, announced on Tuesday, comes in response to escalating violence, reprisal attacks, and civilian deaths blamed on the actions of armed groups operating in the region.
In a strongly worded statement, the military warned of a “dangerous pattern” that threatens not just Bawku but the broader peace and security of the nation.
As part of the new enforcement strategy, robust operations will be conducted across Bawku, Binduri, Nalerigu, and Zebilla. The Armed Forces vowed to “use all necessary force to restore law and order”, urging all citizens to respect the law and cooperate fully.
The curfew in these conflict zones has been revised and will now run from 2 p.m. to 6 a.m., with authorities pledging strict enforcement.
“The Armed Forces will not hesitate to respond appropriately to any attack on security personnel or disruption of operations,” the statement emphasized.
GAF reaffirmed its commitment to protecting communities and assured the public of its readiness to execute its constitutional duty of safeguarding national peace and security.
