A high-powered delegation from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Saturday, August 16, paid a courtesy call on the Oseawuo Division of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional State in the Eastern Region.
The team, led by former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, included National Youth Organiser George Opare Addo, former NDC National Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, diplomat Ambassador Victor Smith, and several senior party officials.
The purpose of the visit was to formally introduce the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for the upcoming Akwatia by-election, Bernard Bediako Baidoo Esq., to Daasebre Dr Assumadu Nyarko Appiah, Chief of Akyem Wenchi, and the traditional leaders of the area.
Addressing the chiefs, Mr Debrah emphasised the NDC’s respect for traditional authority and the importance of maintaining cordial relations between political parties and local leadership. He also appealed for the support and blessings of the traditional council for the party’s candidate.
The chiefs, led by Daasebre Dr Assumadu Nyarko Appiah, welcomed the delegation and acknowledged the significance of the by-election, urging all political parties to ensure peaceful and respectful campaigns.
Meanwhile, political activity in the Akwatia constituency has intensified ahead of the highly anticipated by-election scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025. Both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the NDC are expected to field strong campaigns in what analysts predict will be a closely contested race.
The by-election follows the sudden passing of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the late Member of Parliament for Akwatia, whose death has left the seat vacant.
