Afoko Murder Trial: Court Adjourns Third Retrial to April 7

An Accra criminal court has adjourned the third retrial of the high-profile murder case involving Gregory Afoko to April 7, 2025.

Afoko, who spent nearly a decade in detention, is currently out on bail set at GHS 500,000, while his alleged co-conspirator, Asabke Alangdi, remains on death row.

The adjournment followed a request from the prosecution, with the court agreeing to the new date, provided that the seven-member jury is properly constituted by then.

Gregory Afoko is being tried for the 2015 murder of Adams Mahama, the then Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Mahama succumbed to severe acid burns after being attacked outside his home in Bolgatanga. Before his death, he reportedly identified Afoko and Alangdi as the assailants.

In April 2023, a seven-member jury unanimously convicted Alangdi of conspiracy to commit murder but returned a split verdict on Afoko, acquitting him of murder and conspiracy. This prompted the court to order a retrial.

After nearly 10 years on remand, Afoko was granted bail by the Accra High Court on February 24, 2025, with strict conditions, including two sureties—one of which must be justified. His lawyers had filed multiple bail applications before securing his release.

With the third retrial looming, the court, presided over by Justice Marie-Louise Simmons, will only proceed on April 7 if all outstanding jury-related issues are resolved.
