Ablekuma North Rerun: Hawa Koomson beaten by Unknown Thungs (VIDEO)

The Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun election held on Friday, July 11, 2025, was marred by disturbing scenes of violence, with the former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East and former Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson, assaulted by unknown thugs.

A video obtained by Puretvonline captures the shocking moment thugs descended on Hawa Koomson, kicking and beating her while she lay on the ground, visibly struggling to rise. The attack, which has since sparked public outrage, was only halted after police officers intervened to rescue the former minister from further harm.

The motive for the attack remains unclear, but it has drawn swift condemnation from both political observers and civil society groups calling for accountability and enhanced election-day security.

In a separate but equally troubling incident at the Church of Pentecost, North Odorkor Polling Station 2, a GHOne TV journalist, Agyekum Banahene, was assaulted by a police officer while covering the rerun. The officer allegedly targeted Banahene without cause, ordering him to leave the polling center despite the presence of several other media personnel.

“He just came to me and asked me to leave the premises. Meanwhile, there were other media guys around; he didn’t ask anyone else to leave—only me,” Banahene recounted.

According to the journalist, when he declined to leave, citing his constitutional right to report from the polling grounds, the officer physically assaulted him.

“I said no, I can’t go—what if something happens and I’m not here to report? He started pushing me and then slapped me across the face for no reason. I haven’t wronged anyone,” Banahene added.

These incidents have raised concerns over the conduct of security personnel and the general safety of stakeholders in Ghana’s electoral process. Several groups have since called on the Electoral Commission, the Ghana Police Service, and the National Media Commission to investigate the assaults and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The Ablekuma North rerun, involving 19 polling stations, was ordered by the Electoral Commission following disputes and irregularities in the December 2024 parliamentary elections. The outcome of this rerun remains crucial in shaping the composition of the next Parliament.
