A new Global InfoAnalytics poll has revealed that 79% of Ghanaians support the Speaker of Parliament’s decision to suspend four Members of Parliament following a chaotic altercation at the Appointments Committee vetting of ministerial nominees.
The suspension came after the MPs were involved in a near-physical fight, hurling furniture and damaging parliamentary equipment, disrupting the vetting process.
The poll, conducted between January 30 and February 1, 2025, sampled 952 respondents through online and field interviews. With a margin of error of ±3.2% at a 95% confidence level, the survey provides strong insight into public sentiment on the issue.
According to the findings:
- 79% of Ghanaians support the Speaker’s action.
- 12% oppose the suspension.
- 9% remained neutral on the issue.
The results indicate a broad consensus among Ghanaians that disciplinary measures are necessary to uphold decorum in Parliament.
Beyond the speaker’s decision, the poll revealed positive shifts in public perception:
- 70% of Ghanaians believe the country is on the right track, a significant improvement from 22% recorded a year ago.
- 84% approve of President Mahama’s performance since assuming office.
Despite strong public approval, the Minority Caucus in Parliament has condemned the suspension of three New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs, describing it as an overreach of parliamentary authority and an act of selective justice.
Some critics argue that the Speaker lacks the legal authority to unilaterally suspend MPs, fuelling further debates about the limits of parliamentary leadership and the enforcement of disciplinary actions.
The controversy continues to stir mixed reactions, with supporters defending the move as necessary for maintaining order, while opponents see it as politically motivated.
