7-Year-Old Boy Drowns in Water-Filled Manhole Near West Hills Mall — GNFS

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic drowning of a seven-year-old boy, identified as Ebenezer Nyamekye Mensah, at Abuom Redtop, near the West Hills Mall in Accra, on Sunday, October 26, 2025.

According to a statement signed by Desmond E. Ackah, Divisional Officer II and Head of Public Relations for the GNFS, the Kasoa Fire Station received a distress call about the incident and promptly dispatched a rescue team to the scene, arriving at 3:45 p.m.

The team immediately began a search and rescue operation in a dug manhole pit filled with water, where the child was reported missing. After an intensive effort, firefighters recovered the lifeless body of the boy, which was subsequently handed over to the police. The remains were later transferred to the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Hospital mortuary for further investigation.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the deceased had been playing with his brother near the site before the tragic incident occurred.

In its statement, the GNFS extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family while urging parents and guardians to exercise extra vigilance over their children, especially around open pits, manholes, and excavations that may pose drowning risks.

“We urge all community members to ensure that open pits, manholes, and water-filled excavations are properly covered and secured to prevent similar tragedies,” the statement emphasised.

The GNFS reiterated its commitment to public safety and called for collective responsibility in preventing avoidable accidents, especially as the rainy season continues to create hazardous conditions across several communities.
